What is Sugar Wax

Have you heard of sugar wax, or “sugaring”? Sugaring to remove hair has been used by Egyptian and Greek women for centuries. Like other types of wax, sugar wax is applied to the skin and then removed, taking body hair along with it. You can also use it on your face.

Commonly sugar wax is made of cane or white sugar. As you probably already know, it takes a lot of processing in the making of white sugar, which also involves a bunch of chemicals. Those chemicals, fuel and water used can be considered as not eco-friendly and not sustainable production. While retaining the same properties of the common sugaring, coconut sugar can be an alternative to make eco-friendly and at the same time sustainable sugar wax. On top of that, coconut sugar wax is zero waste and non-toxic. After using, the sugar wax can be dissolved in hot water and you can just throw it in your sink.

The Benefit of Coconut Sugar Wax

The great thing about coconut sugar wax is that it's so much better for your skin than shaving or waxing. It's all natural, and doesn't rip the hairs or cause bumps or irritation. Sugar wax is also a much gentler way of removing hair, and doesn't hurt nearly as much as waxing.

Here’s how you can make a coconut sugar wax at home:

  • Ingredients:
    • 1 cup coconut sugar
    • 1/8 cup lemon juice (or apple cider vinegar)
    • 1/8 cup warm water
  • Instructions:
    • Place a medium-sized pot on the stove and add all ingredients to the pot.
    • Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat, making sure to stir frequently to avoid burning.
    • Once the mixture starts bubbling, reduce to medium heat and continue to stir frequently.
    • Remove the pot from heat when the mixture turns golden brown. The consistency of your sugar paste should be similar to hot syrup. If it's thick like honey, heat it a little longer.
    • Transfer to a bowl and let the paste cool for 30 minutes. The wax should still be warm but easy to manipulate.
  • How to use:
    • Hold the wax with the tips of your fingers and thumb.
    • Spread the wax in the direction the hairs are growing.
    • Pull the skin taught with the other hand and pull off wax in a fast movement in the opposite direction.
    • Optional: if the wax is too sticky you can apply it then use wax strips to pull off the wax.
    • Always rip off the wax parallel to the skin (never in an upward motion).
    • If you have extra paste, store it in a plastic container at room temperature.
